Flame Hydrolysis & Vapor Phase Processing Senior Scientist
Corning Incorporated is one of the world’s leading innovators in glass, ceramic, and materials science. They are seeking a Senior Scientist to perform hands-on experimental research and process development in flame hydrolysis and vapor-phase deposition for forming inorganic and glass-based objects.
Manufacturing
Responsibilities
Design, develop, and execute experimental research focused on flame hydrolysis and vapor-phase deposition processes
Establish and optimize process parameters including precursor delivery, gas flow, burner configuration, flame conditions, and deposition dynamics
Investigate the relationships between process conditions, deposition behavior, microstructure, and glass quality
Build, modify, and troubleshoot experimental setups and deposition equipment
Analyze experimental data and leverage modeling to guide iterative process improvements
Document results in internal technical reports, presentations, and invention disclosures
Collaborate with materials scientists, chemists, and engineers to integrate processing insights into broader development efforts
Maintain rigorous laboratory safety practices, particularly for high-temperature and gas-handling systems
Qualification
Required
Minimum Master's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, or a closely related field
Hands-on experience with flame hydrolysis, vapor-phase deposition, or closely related high-temperature gas-phase processing techniques
In-depth knowledge of chemical reaction kinetics of homogenous reactions, vapor deposition or glass sintering
Strong understanding of process development, experimental design, and troubleshooting
Experience working with experimental systems involving gas flow, burners, reactors, or high-temperature environments
Ability to independently plan and execute experimental research
Strong analytical thinking, data interpretation, and technical communication skills
Preferred
PhD degree desired
Direct experience with one or more of the following: Flame Hydrolysis Deposition (FHD), Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD), Outside Vapor Deposition (OVD), MCVD, or related vapor-based glass processes
Experience in industrial R&D or applied research settings
Familiarity with precursor chemistry, aerosol formation, or vapor transport phenomena
Experience in developing or scaling experimental processes beyond initial proof-of-concept
