Field Engineer, Testing and Commissioning

The Field Engineer for Testing & Commissioning is responsible for commissioning, maintaining, and troubleshooting transmission and distribution level protection and control systems within client substations, ensuring safe and reliable energization of new equipment.

Responsibilities

Develop and execute detailed commissioning plans and energization procedures for new T&S equipment
Create and run comprehensive test plans for a wide range of substation systems, including protective relays, SCADA, substation automation, and power equipment
Analyze complex test results against expected values and engineering designs to verify proper functionality and compliance
Witness and approve Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) for critical equipment as a recognized technical authority
Serve as the technical lead in the field for troubleshooting, performing root cause analysis, and resolving issues with malfunctioning power equipment and P&C systems
Lead field investigations for system events and protective relaying misoperations, documenting findings and recommending corrective actions
Support and oversee corrective and preventative maintenance activities on protection system components and SCADA equipment
Provide technical leadership and direction to client maintenance crews and contractor teams on all work associated with T&S systems
Interface with the client's Engineering, Work Management, Project Management, and Operations departments to support daily work activities and outage planning
Play a key role in maintaining engineering drawings, managing relay/SCADA databases, and supporting NERC/CIP audit activities

Required

Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or a related engineering discipline
7+ years of professional engineering experience with a significant focus on hands-on testing, commissioning, and maintenance of transmission and substation P&C systems
In-depth knowledge of protective relaying principles, SCADA systems, substation automation, and associated communication protocols (e.g., DNP3, IEC 61850)
Proven ability to analyze and interpret complex electrical schematics and control diagrams
Strong electrical troubleshooting skills and the ability to apply engineering theory to solve real-world problems
Valid driver's license and willingness to work extended hours during storms or emergencies in a field environment

Preferred

Licensed Professional Engineer (PE)
Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills with demonstrated team leadership abilities on critical projects
Extensive experience with test equipment from manufacturers like Doble, Omicron, or Megger
