Engineering Technician (Laboratory)

Responsibilities
Sets up, calibrates, and operates various pieces of complex equipment and instrumentation
Performs a broad range of difficult chemical and physical analyses using complex instrumentation and equipment
Performs and records calculations (arithmetic and algebraic) in the course of data analysis
Collects, reduces, and records data using manual, calculator-assisted, and computer techniques
Performs associated duties as assigned within the work areas to ensure proper housekeeping incidental to care and protection of equipment, records, and procedures
Performs work with a high degree of accuracy in all phases of duties under general supervision
Assists professional staff as required in identifying problems and in establishing new and improved procedures and techniques
Requires the application of good judgment and skill in the performance of critical data assignments
Precisely follows prescribed safety procedures in handling explosive, toxic, flammable, or otherwise hazardous materials
Demonstrates the ability to methodically perform specified tasks and assigned functions
Ensures that operations are conducted according to applicable environmental, safety, health, and management requirements
Observes and reports unusual occurrences or events that may affect safety, quality, or understanding of experiments or operations
Assists professional staff with the training of other Engineering Technicians as assigned
Responsible for maintaining a knowledge of applicable Federal, State, Department Of Energy(DOE), Corporate and Plant rules, regulations, Labor Agreements and Plant-wide operating policies and procedures
Performs other duties as assigned
Required to attend and/or successfully complete training classes as determined by the Training and Development Technologies Department, through General Employee Training (Reference DOE Order 5480.19), and Management
Participates in worker involvement including input to work planning and methods to identify hazards and controls
Understands a worker’s right to stop work when they feel their own or other’s personal safety is jeopardized
Attends all required safety meetings and training, offers suggestions on improvements to the work environment
Sets up, calibrates, and operates various instruments including, but not limited to: Mass, Raman, Infrared Spectroscopy (IR), Ultraviolet Spectroscopy (UV) and Atomic Absorption Spectrometers; thermal analyses such as Chemical Reactivity Testing (CRT), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA), and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA); liquid and gas chromatographs; and related equipment used for performing varied analyses
Performs qualitative and quantitative analyses in both gravimetric and volumetric areas

Must be able to read, write, and comprehend applicable written and/or oral instructions
Must be physically fit to perform the above job functions as determined by Medical Evaluation
All qualifications, work history, training, and education are to be verified by direct contact with former employers and/or documented proof
Must have no documented quality or safety issues during the most recent 18 month period
Satisfactory completion of a Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline or an Associate degree in chemistry or chemical technology
OR Satisfactory completion of 18 semester hours of relevant college chemistry including as a minimum the courses of General Chemistry I & II, Organic Chemistry I, Analytical Chemistry, and their associated laboratories, and 6 semester hours of college math, specifically in college Algebra and Trigonometry
OR Satisfactory completion of 12 semester hours of relevant college chemistry (including associated laboratories), and 6 semester hours of college math, specifically in college Algebra and Trigonometry and three years of experience in a laboratory performing hands-on chemical operations. Must have no documented quality or safety issues during the most recent 18 month period
OR Any combination of the above college credit courses and equivalent experience to equal six years. Must have no documented quality or safety issues during the most recent 18 month period
In addition to the above requirements, the applicant must also meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (1 year job-related experience, or a DOE O 426.2A alternative). DOE O 426.2A experience requirements can be satisfied following employment
Lifting or carrying less than 51 pounds
Ability to keyboard
Repetitive motion of the wrist/forearm
Walking (1 hour/day)
Standing (1 hour/day)
Near vision (must be able to read computer screen, manuscript, book etc, at approximately 13-16 inches from the face)
Ability to distinguish basic colors (red, green, etc.)
Ability to qualify to wear a respirator (Engineering Tech-reuse) ONLY
No evidence of current drug or alcohol abuse
Ability to use small tools
Ability to perform safety-sensitive duties
Requires a Q clearance; however, all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status
The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required
Requires Human Reliability Program (HRP) certification. If the successful candidate is not currently certified in the HRP, the certification process will be initiated upon assumption of the position
If the successful candidate is currently certified in the HRP, a review for HRP certification in the appropriate category will be performed by the hiring manager and the HRP Management Official, and the certification process in the appropriate category will be initiated upon assumption of the position
