Staff Accountant II

Exceptional Parents Unlimited, Inc. is seeking a Staff Accountant II to support the financial integrity and long-term sustainability of the organization. This role involves managing complex budgeting processes, overseeing grant and contract accounting, and ensuring compliance with funder requirements.

Individual & Family Services

Responsibilities

Manage the financial components of grants and contracts—including multi-year awards—from pre-award planning through closeout
Prepare accurate and timely general ledger entries related to grants, budgets, and revenue recognition
Reconcile grant and contract accounts; ensure proper classification, compliance, and timely recognition of expenditures and revenue
Prepare and submit financial reports and invoices to funders in accordance with funding requirements and deadlines
Maintain well-organized accounting records and documentation in both digital and physical formats
Implement internal controls to ensure financial integrity and compliance
Analyze year-to-date grant spending; prepare and support allowable budget modifications in collaboration with Program Managers and Directors
Conduct forecasting, scenario planning, and variance analysis to support leadership decision-making regarding grant budgets
Prepare assigned audit schedules for annual Single Audit
Track and maintain restricted and unrestricted funding balances
Understand, apply, and support cost allocation methodologies, including labor distribution
Maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and all applicable privacy regulations
Regularly attend work during EPU facility hours (Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM), with occasional flexibility based on business needs
Must perform other duties as assigned by the Accounting Manager, Chief Financial Officer, or President/Chief Executive Officer

Required

Requires a Bachelor's degree or higher in Accounting, Finance, or closely related field
Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
Proficiency in cost allocation, financial reporting, and grant compliance requirements
Ability to work independently while effectively collaborating across departments
Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and adherence to deadlines
Demonstrated integrity and commitment to ethical accounting practices
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Proficient in designing and analyzing Excel spreadsheets
Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive financial information
5+ years of progressive experience in nonprofit accounting and grant management
Experience with fund accounting, GAAP, and Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200) for managing federal grants
Proficiency working with QuickBooks or comparable accounting software, Adobe Pro, and Microsoft Office products
Must hold a valid California Driver's license and good driving record with no serious violations for the previous two-year period and be able to provide proof of current automobile liability insurance
