Responsibilities

Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs
Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling
Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis
Tools utilized may include CATIA, IDEAS, ProEngineer and a variety of software applications
The candidate must have the ability to develop tasking program plans, develop project plans, work collaboratively, and have an understanding of technical writing
A candidate will communicate with internal NNS customers, and external (Navy, vendors) customers
A proficiency in Microsoft Office applications is required

Required

Bachelor's Degree and 0 years of relevant exempt experience
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program
A proficiency in Microsoft Office applications is required
The candidate must have the ability to develop tasking program plans, develop project plans, work collaboratively, and have an understanding of technical writing
A candidate will communicate with internal NNS customers, and external (Navy, vendors) customers

Preferred

Educational background in materials (metals, welding, polymer matrices. etc) encouraged
Motivated individual who can work both independently and in a collaborative environment
Ability to perform research, calculations, and develop test plans for assigned projects and tasks
Work with other departments in material testing and incorporation through advanced and additive manufacturing
Candidate must have the ability to create technical reports and presentations, and present findings to shipyard and Navy program leadership
