PUBLIC WORKS SUPERVISOR
The City of Commerce is seeking a Public Works Supervisor to oversee the staff and operations of an assigned Public Works division. The role involves planning and supervising maintenance activities for parks, streets, and facilities, ensuring safe and clean environments for residents.

Responsibilities
Plans, coordinates, and supervises the maintenance and repair of assigned public works functions including City parks, streets, trees, landscaped areas, and municipal facilities
Coordinates daily work activities and maintenance operations; assigns and reviews the work of crews and contractors; establishes and enforces work methods, standards, and schedules
Perform all the duties of the Senior Crew Leaders, as needed
Supervises staff through appropriate work delegation; trains, coaches, and evaluates staff performance; provides technical guidance and enforces safety regulations and procedures
Inspects parks, streets, and facilities to identify maintenance and repair needs; develops solutions to ensure safe and aesthetically pleasing environments
Surveys City street system and infrastructure; documents road and roadway hazards, debris, and missing or damaged signs and street lights; prioritizes maintenance and repair projects, and assigns to work crews
Oversees special projects, including materials acquisition, cost estimation, scheduling, and quality control, and ensure contractors’ compliance with the project specifications
Supervises maintenance of irrigation systems, including inspection, troubleshooting, and repair
Plans and directs the safe application of pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, and cleaning chemicals
Oversees the maintenance and repair of tools, vehicles, equipment, and infrastructure specific to assigned division, such as roofs, gutters, lighting, and irrigation
Supervises and coordinates daily and special event maintenance operations and resource allocations; ensures effective use of labor, materials, and equipment
Supervises a variety of administrative activities including records management, employee scheduling, payroll reporting, and work activity reports; maintains inventories and ensures that adequate materials, supplies, and tools are available; reports and resolves safety conditions and security issues; processes and responds to work requests and complaints
Coordinates and supervises setup and teardown for special events as directed
Recognizes and reports unsafe acts, conditions, accidents, and injuries
Responds to and supervises after-hours maintenance emergencies and requests
Promotes and enforces safe work practices and maintains a culture of safety awareness
Performs related duties as assigned
Qualification
Required
High school diploma or equivalent GED
Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in maintenance, repair, and operations in one or more of the following areas dependent on division assigned: Parks and Landscape Maintenance; Facility Maintenance, including carpentry, electrical, plumbing, or HVAC; or Street and Tree Maintenance, including pavement repair, tree trimming, or right-of-way maintenance
Valid California Driver's License and safe driving record
Completion of JPIA Flagging Safety training within six (6) months of employment
Possession of or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment: Qualified Applicator Certificate (California Department of Pesticide Regulation) for Parks Maintenance Division
Possession of or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment: Qualified Applicator Certificate (California Department of Pesticide Regulation) for Streets And Trees Maintenance Division
International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborist credential for Streets And Trees Maintenance Division
Must be available to respond to emergency situations seven (7) days per week, 24 hours per day, as assigned
Preferred
Two (2) years of experience in a lead or supervisory capacity is highly desirable
May require Journey Level trade certification(s) such as Electrical, Biohazard, or Aerial Lift Operator
May require possession of a California Commercial Driver's License
