Communications Consultant

Physicians for Social Responsibility Los Angeles is seeking a Communications Consultant to support the Environmental Justice Communities Against Plastics coalition. The role focuses on developing strategic communications to amplify the coalition's identity, raise awareness of public health harms related to plastic pollution, and elevate community voices.

Responsibilities

Build and implement messaging strategies and tools that effectively communicate EJCAP’s mission, values, and impact
Raise awareness and educate people about the lifecycle of plastics and the associated public health harms
Craft storytelling and messaging that resonates with community members, media, legislators, and impacted communities
Work with the EJCAP communications committee to develop key messages that effectively communicate our priorities and community voices
Use data-informed approaches to ensure messaging aligns with current community needs and environmental justice priorities
Collect and amplify stories from EJCAP coalition and community members, and develop a strategic plan to share these narratives in ways that build public awareness and influence policy change
Embed a long-term vision for environmental justice and systemic change through storytelling, organizing, and advocacy
Develop a digital communications plan (including web and social)
Build content that increases understanding of key issues, grows advocacy skills, and encourages community leadership
Manage EJCAP social media channels
Work with the EJCAP communications committee and coalition coordinator to identify compelling stories and how to package them for our digital channels
Draft press releases, op-eds, and pitches to local and statewide publications
Develop talking points and other media outreach resources
Help develop an updated press list, particularly of contacts with significant influence in the plastics and environmental sectors
Research and compile media stories to help understand what our opposition and allies are saying

Required

Bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience)
7+ years of experience

Knowledge of public health
