Responsibilities

Obtain committee scheduling information via email and make revisions to the schedule per notification from committee staff; enter pertinent committee and hearing information into database updated and posted on congress.gov, senate.gov, and Webster
Track the committee status of bills, nominations, and treaties for data entry on congress.gov
Clarify and/or resolve any questions or concerns regarding committee schedule with designated committee point of contact
Confirm future (one week ahead) committee meeting or hearing schedules with designated committee point of contact; and enter projected schedule into database for publication in the Daily Digest and display on congress.gov, senate.gov, and Webster
Record public laws for publication in the Daily Digest
Provide assistance to Assistant Editor, Daily Digest in summarizing committee reports and finalizing committee information for publication in the Daily Digest
Assist the Editor and Assistant Editor in nightly wrap-up procedures after the Senate has adjourned for the day
On days when the Senate is out of session, continue to update any committee scheduling that comes in at least once a day. The office rotates this responsibility
Cross train within the Daily Digest and with other legislative staff positions at the direction of the Editor, Daily Digest, or the Legislative Clerk
Maintain current knowledge of the Daily Digest’s Emergency Action Plan (EAP) and Continuity of operations (COOP) plan; participate in periodic exercises and drills
Provide all customers with the highest level of customer service

Required

Work requires a bachelor's degree in English, journalism, history, political science, or related field
One to three years of legislative administrative experience preferred
Knowledge of the legislative process, Senate procedures, organization, and congressional documents/terminology
Ability to organize and comprehend legislative material and prepare concise written abstracts that conform to established requirements
Ability to edit and proof documents for grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, spelling, and vocabulary
Ability to use computer and relevant software programs
Ability to use tact and diplomacy when dealing with others
Ability to work extended and unscheduled hours as dictated by the Senate schedule
Ability to be flexible and adaptable in a dynamic environment
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
Ability to follow departmental rules, regulations, procedures, and functions
Ability to maintain professionalism in and around the Senate Chamber
Ability to process, sort, and file forms and records

Preferred

Basic knowledge of the Senate as an institution, Senate procedures and organization, and the legislative process preferred, with a desire and willingness to learn more about the history and operation of the Senate
Knowledge of the Senate structure and functions is a plus
Legislative administrative experience is also a plus
