Senior Payroll Manager

Artemis is a rapidly scaling, high-tech organization looking to build out their global accounting and finance teams. The Senior Payroll Manager will lead domestic payroll operations, ensuring accurate and timely employee payments while maintaining compliance with payroll laws and accounting standards.

Responsibilities

Own full-cycle U.S. payroll processing for hourly and salaried employees, including regular pay, overtime, bonuses, and deductions, and resolve complex or escalated payroll issues
Oversee all payroll tax activities, including federal, state, and local filings, payments, amendments, and annual reporting such as W-2 and W-2C preparation
Lead the accounting side of payroll by managing payroll-related month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities, including review of journal entries, accruals, and balance sheet reconciliations
Manage employee reimbursement and expense processing, ensuring accurate payment, coding, and financial reporting
Direct payroll audit and compliance efforts by coordinating with internal and external auditors, preparing audit schedules, supporting SOX requirements, and maintaining audit-ready documentation
Develop, document, and enforce payroll policies, procedures, and internal controls to support accuracy, compliance, and consistency
Partner with HR, Finance, and third-party payroll providers to ensure data integrity, regulatory compliance, and smooth payroll operations
Lead, mentor, and support payroll team members while fostering a collaborative and accountable team environment
Identify and implement opportunities for automation, system enhancements, and process improvements across payroll operations

Required

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, or a related field
10+ years of experience in payroll administration and accounting with a minimum of 2+ years in a leadership capacity with people management responsibilities
Strong knowledge of U.S. payroll regulations and payroll tax requirements
Experience supporting payroll audits and maintaining internal controls
Hands-on experience with payroll systems such as ADP, Workday, SAP Payroll, or Paychex, as well as Concur
Background in payroll accounting and close processes
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and payroll reporting tools

Preferred

Experience with multi-state payroll environments
Exposure to SOX or public-company audit requirements
Experience managing outsourced payroll vendors or service providers
