Staff Attorney II, Senior Outreach

Bet Tzedek Legal Services has provided high-quality, free legal services to Los Angeles’ most vulnerable residents for over 50 years. The Staff Attorney II, Senior Outreach will address a wide range of legal needs experienced by low-income older adults, providing legal intake and services at community locations.

Responsibilities

Provide older clients from diverse backgrounds with culturally competent, person-centered, trauma-informed legal intake and services on-site at community locations
Develop, lead, and/or promote outreach, education, and service programs for community members, community center staff and/or pro bono partners
Conduct pre-screening interviews for older adults identified by internal referral or trusted community partners
Provide advice and counsel, limited service, and full-scope representation on behalf of older adults on a range of basic poverty law areas including but not limited to housing access, income stability, medical and consumer debt, advance planning, access to healthcare services, and protective services (safety and self-determination)
Clearly and professionally communicate with clients, colleagues, community partners, courts, agencies, and the public
Work closely with the Directing Attorney to track client data and outcomes

Required

At least 3 years of legal experience
Member in good standing of State Bar of California
Clearly demonstrated proficiency with one or more substantive legal areas relevant to older adults (public benefits, consumer issues, advance planning/probate matters, medical debt program, landlord/tenant or other housing-related issues, or similar)
High levels of emotional intelligence and cultural competency, including being curious, self-aware, cognizant of bias, empathetic, patient, and willing to listen, and having a growth mindset
Ability to work effectively with community partners and volunteers
Access to reliable transportation

Preferred

Ability to read, write, and speak fluently in a language other than English (particularly Spanish)
