Structural Designer

Ryan Hughes Design is seeking a Structural Designer with a strong structural engineering background to support the design, coordination, and execution of structural systems across their projects. This role focuses on pre-construction support, permitting coordination, design documentation, and ensuring structural design intent is communicated and implemented effectively in the field.

Responsibilities

Prepare and develop structural and hydraulic design drawings, details, and documentation for permitting and construction
Assist in translating structural engineering concepts into clear, buildable design solutions
Support the interpretation and application of structural design intent during construction
Assist with pre-construction activities, including preparation of permitting documentation
Coordinate with municipalities and regulatory agencies to address comments, questions, and required revisions
Track permitting-related issues and help work through solutions in collaboration with project teams
Support Construction Managers by clarifying structural design intent and responding to field questions
Participate in occasional site visits and milestone walkthroughs to review structural installations and verify alignment with design intent
Identify potential field issues early and communicate recommendations to the project team
Help develop, document, and maintain a structural design catalog, including standard details, best practices, and lessons learned
Contribute to improving efficiency and consistency in structural drawings and documentation for future projects

Required

Strong structural engineering background
Ability to prepare and develop structural and hydraulic design drawings, details, and documentation for permitting and construction
Assist in translating structural engineering concepts into clear, buildable design solutions
Support the interpretation and application of structural design intent during construction
Assist with pre-construction activities, including preparation of permitting documentation
Coordinate with municipalities and regulatory agencies to address comments, questions, and required revisions
Track permitting-related issues and help work through solutions in collaboration with project teams

Excellent communication skills including oral, written and listening
Ability to read, understand and interpret contract documents, drawings, specifications, scopes of work and project schedule
Working knowledge of hydraulic systems for pools and water features, including circulation, filtration, and basic pump and piping layouts
Able to multi-task and handle competing priorities while maintaining excellent customer relations
Excellent organizational skills to manage the many details necessary for successful construction
Judgment to know when to appropriately escalate issues up the chain of command
Excellent management skills to effectively manage subcontractor performance to high quality
Demonstrate continuous performance improvement in targeted areas of responsibility in alignment with the overall company strategy
Must be able to read construction documents
Educational background in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering (structural focus), or a related field
At least five (5) years of project supervision in the construction industry, preferably within high-end residential and/or commercial projects
Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritize numerous tasks
Daily computer usage is required for this position
Daily travel to job sites or other relevant events
Position requires routine lifting, bending, pushing, pulling while handling basic office supplies and material deliveries up to 50 lbs
Tolerance to prolonged exposure to a computer monitor and keyboard utilization
May require use of own vehicle to attend off-site meetings and trainings or events
Anticipates problems in any areas of responsibility and presents solutions
Demonstrates emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills, initiative, self-motivation, practical learning skills, enthusiasm and an ability to complete multiple tasks in a timely and accurate manner
Demonstrates reliable decision-making and understands the consequences of actions
High level decision making which goes beyond pre-established procedures
Work collaboratively with ownership on organizational and revenue initiatives
Frequent contact with clients, contractors, vendors, inspectors, internal employees at all levels
