Bridge Inspection Quality Control Engineer

This senior technical role involves providing quality control oversight for NBIS-compliant bridge inspection programs, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and regulatory compliance across various projects.

Responsibilities
Serve as the principal Quality Control Engineer for bridge inspection projects in accordance with FHWA National Bridge Inspection Standards, AASHTO Manual for Bridge Evaluation, NYSDOT Bridge Inspection Manual, NJDOT policies, and other agency-specific requirements
Perform independent field quality control reviews of inspection teams to verify accuracy of condition assessments, element-level ratings, critical findings identification, and field documentation
Conduct detailed office quality control reviews of inspection reports, NBI and SNBI data entries, scour evaluations, load rating inputs when applicable, and flagging documentation
Ensure inspection deliverables are accurate, complete, properly signed and sealed as required, and submitted in compliance with regulatory timelines
Coordinate directly with clients including NYSDOT, NJDOT, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and other agencies to resolve technical discrepancies and implement corrective actions
Oversee quality assurance processes including sampling reviews, independent verifications, control inspections, and performance audits
Mentor and train Team Leaders and Assistant Team Leaders on inspection standards, condition state coding, advanced inspection techniques, and best practices for complex structures
Collaborate with inspection teams, program managers, and multidisciplinary groups to integrate quality control findings into bridge management and preservation strategies
Monitor evolving NBIS requirements, FHWA guidance, AASHTO interim updates, and state-specific inspection policies
Support business development efforts through technical proposal contributions and client presentations related to inspection quality and compliance
Perform occasional field visits for high-priority or disputed inspections while ensuring compliance with safety and access requirements
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering; Master's degree preferred
Active Professional Engineer license in New York; additional state licenses preferred
Minimum of ten years of experience in bridge inspection, evaluation, or structural engineering with demonstrated quality control or supervisory responsibilities
FHWA or NHI-approved comprehensive bridge inspection training with current refresher courses
Demonstrated expertise in quality control and quality assurance processes for NBIS-compliant inspection programs
Strong familiarity with NYSDOT, NJDOT, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and other regional agency inspection requirements
Thorough knowledge of NBIS regulations, AASHTO Manual for Bridge Evaluation, SNBI element ratings, condition assessment practices, and load rating integration
Proficiency with bridge inspection software, Microsoft Office, and digital documentation systems
Strong analytical skills, exceptional attention to detail, and excellent written and verbal communication abilities
Ability to perform field quality control activities, including work at heights, in confined spaces, and in varying weather conditions
Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, lead technical reviews, and deliver high-quality inspection products under tight schedules
