SOFTWARE ENGINEER 1
Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of HII, is the largest industrial employer in Virginia, specializing in the design and construction of U.S. Navy nuclear aircraft carriers and submarines. The role of Software Engineer 1 involves designing, developing, and testing operating systems-level software and supporting various engineering organizations with information systems.

Responsibilities
Design, develop, and test operating systems-level software, compilers, and network distribution software
Set operational specifications, and formulate and analyze software requirements
May design embedded systems software
Build and maintain systems that process information across multiple disciplines: Materials Management, Planning and Provisioning, Human Resources, Finance, etc
Interface with the most powerful systems in the world: SAP, Team Center, SharePoint, JDA Component Supplier Management System, Hyperion, etc
Support engineering organizations of all disciplines (Mechanical, Metallurgical, Electrical, Radiological, Civil, etc.), craftsmen of all types (Electricians, Welders, Fitters, Fabricators, Machinists, etc.) and critical support organizations (Communications, Payroll, Clinic, Quality, Security, Supply Chain, etc.)
Participate in grooming sessions where you are developing software in partnership with business partners and vendors; leveraging your creativity to architect and design innovative solutions; and working collaboratively with a diverse group of project managers, systems engineers, software developers, solution architects, technical subject matter experts, and system users to deliver solutions and business value
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's Degree and 0 years of relevant exempt experience
One of the following may be used as an equivalent to Bachelor's Degree for Information Technology Related Positions Only: NNS Apprentice School graduate, Navy Nuclear Power School (NNPS) graduate, Associate's Degree or other formal 2 year program and 2 years of relevant exempt experience or 4 years of relevant non-exempt experience, Military Paygrade E-5 or above military experience, High School/GED and 4 years combined of Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience or other relevant exempt experience, High School/GED and 8 years combined of Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience or other relevant non-exempt experience, A relevant professional certification can be substituted for a Bachelor's Degree
Preferred
Candidate should have basic understanding of the following: Microsoft Visual Studio
Programming Languages: C/C++, C#, .NET, Java, Python
Knowledge of product development utilizing PLM systems
IT systems architecture / design experience and knowledge and use of each stage of the Software Development Life Cycle
How to perform under conflicting/changing direction/priorities
Written/oral communication and teaming skills
DevOps methodologies and tools, such as Continuous Integration/Delivery (CI/CD) preferably with Git and Azure DevOps
Experience with Test Driven Development (TDD) using Design Patterns such as Dependency Injection and Adapters, and MSTest and NSubstitute
