Patient Financial Advocate

Responsibilities
Perform a thorough financial screening of patients
Serve as North Memorial's primary contact for patient education in areas of insurance benefits, levels of coverage, and billing and collection processes
Ensure that all accounts have been cleared for billing
Obtain insurance authorization for services
Secure payment arrangements (including collection of co-payment/coinsurance) prior to patient discharge and for major outpatient services
Identify other potential payment sources (including Financial Assistance program, initiating/completing the Medical Assistance application process)
Provide costs estimates
Qualification
Required
High school graduate or equivalent required
One to two years of work experience as Patient Financial Advocate, Patient Registration, Patient Accounting, or a related health care field
Prior experience in customer service, especially in front end patient interactions regarding financial processes
Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills
Effective organizational skills, including ability to prioritize, problem solve, and resolve conflict
Excellent communication skills, especially when interacting with patients and families
Advanced knowledge of insurance, including government assistance programs
Must be able to work under considerable stress, using tact and diplomacy
Strong computer skills
Efficient typing skills of at least 40wpm
Basic math skills
Preferred
Bachelor's degree strongly preferred
Prior experience in communicating with insurance carriers to obtain authorization for services is preferred
Bilingual skills (English/Spanish) a plus
