Trades Generalist (Caleb Smith)
New York State Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation is seeking a Trades Generalist to perform journey-level work in carpentry and other skilled trades. The role involves maintenance, construction, and supervision of staff while ensuring safety and efficiency in various tasks.

Responsibilities
Plans, and performs all required maintenance work; construction and repairs of small buildings and structures, repairs or replaces docks, walkways, doors and windows, painting, basic plumbing and electrical, etc
Prioritize repair projects to meet the immediate needs of the park
Supervises, trains, and instructs staff to complete projects and repairs
Responsible for maintaining adequate levels of supplies, tools, and equipment to accomplish tasks
Use and maintain machinery, equipment, and carpentry tools; making sure work area and all equipment is clean, safe, and properly serviced
Oversee preventive maintenance and repairs on vehicles and equipment
Operate plow trucks, tractors, loaders, sit down mowers, UTV’s and other equipment as required
Operate and maintain chainsaws for tree removal and storm clean up, assist with tree report, willing to attend chainsaw training (Game of Logging 1,2,3) and obtain first aid and CPR/AED certification
River maintenance including removal of fallen trees, river grass, pruning vegetation, etc
Conducts mandatory OSHA and Facility inspections, reporting to Regional Health and Safety office by deadlines, attend Regional Health and Safety meetings. Trains staff in proper safety practices utilizing Agency and OSHA/PESH guidelines
Trains and supervises staff in the safe use and maintenance of large and small equipment, carpentry power and hand tools, vehicles, chainsaws, etc
Conducts safety and maintenance inspections of facility, corrects problems where possible, and make requests to supervisor for appropriate skilled trades assistance when needed. Completes required safety reports
May draw rough sketches or prepare plans to scale to accomplish projects as required
Assists as necessary with general area maintenance including but not limited to grounds upkeep, landscaping, snow and ice control, litter control, facility restrooms (supplies and cleanliness), and essential office needs
Assumes responsibility as acting supervisor in the absence of the Park Manager and Park Supervisors which may include performing the duties of opening and or closing the facility
Perform other related duties as required
Qualification
Required
Four years of full-time experience in a trade under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in skilled trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services
When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license that allows the candidate to legally operate a vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment
Must have the ability to operate a chainsaw and complete Game of Logging level 1, 2, and 3 or equivalent training within the probationary period and maintain it as a term and condition of employment
Preferred
Current NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Employees only, with at least one year of permanent or contingent-permanent qualifying service as a Trades Generalist
