LHH is partnering with a venture-backed AI company based in Austin that is redefining possibilities in artificial intelligence. They are seeking a Part-Time Controller to oversee finance leadership, compliance, and reporting while working primarily remote with occasional onsite meetings.

Responsibilities

Oversee an outsourced CPA firm for accounting and tax deliverables; review outputs and ensure accuracy
Maintain US GAAP compliance; implement internal controls; drive audit and due-diligence readiness
Lead budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow analysis; deliver actionable insights and monthly reporting packages
Prepare materials for board meetings and fundraising efforts; standardize KPI dashboards and commentary
Manage cap table processes (e.g., via Carta); support option grants and documentation
Assist with light HR and benefits tasks as needed in a lean startup environment

Required

CPA with Big Four/public accounting foundation (audit or advisory)
4+ years of progressive experience spanning close, controls, and reporting
Advanced Excel and comfort with startup tech stacks/automation
Self-starter who plans ahead, communicates crisply, and thrives in a lean environment
Ability to work hybrid from Austin or travel there 1–2x per month if based in DFW/Houston

Preferred

Startup experience: Comfortable with ambiguity and building scalable processes from scratch (close calendars, policy libraries, RACI ownership)
Fundraising & investor relations: Exposure to diligence prep, board reporting, KPI frameworks, monthly investor updates, and governance rhythms
Equity management: Familiarity with cap table administration and platforms like Carta; option grant workflows; basic scenario modeling a plus
Systems & automation: Hands-on with modern finance tools (ERP, consolidations, AR/AP, expense management) and a bias for pragmatically automating repetitive work
Cross-functional partnership: Proven success collaborating with HR, Operations, Engineering/Product, and external vendors to deliver timely results
Governance & compliance: Experience documenting SOX-like controls in a VC-backed or pre-IPO environment; able to write clear narratives and checklists
