The NYS Department of Transportation is seeking a Principal Drafting Technician (Structural) to work in the Office of Structures. The role involves preparing and checking engineering drawings and computations, conducting field investigations, and developing physical engineering models for various structural projects.

Responsibilities

Prepare drawings of moderate to complex difficulty for a variety of structural engineering projects using MicroStation CADD software
Prepare and check engineering computations of moderate to complex difficulty
Prepare and check quantity estimates
Perform field investigations to collect or confirm data
Develop and utilize complete physical engineering models for design, clash detection, visualization, construction coordination, contract plan preparation, and estimating
Prepare and maintain the Department standard details for bridges (BD Sheets) and the Office of Structures Bridge Manual
Review contractor submittals for construction and fabrication of structural elements
Special assignments to address management needs
Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations

Required

One year of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as an Engineering Geologist, Engineering Materials Analyst, Environmental Engineering Technician 2, Junior Architect, Senior Drafting Technician (all parenthetics), Senior Engineering Technician, or Senior Engineering Technician (Soils)
Four years of drafting experience including at least one year of specialized drafting experience in structural engineering
A bachelor's degree in engineering, engineering technology, construction technology, architecture, or architectural technology
An associate's degree in engineering, engineering technology, construction technology, architecture, or architectural technology AND two years of drafting experience including one year of specialized drafting experience in structural engineering
A certificate in computer-aided drafting issued by a regionally accredited college or university AND two years of drafting experience including at least one year of specialized drafting experience in structural engineering
Certificates from a Trade or Technical school will be accepted only if it is from an institution that is regionally accredited or recognized by the NYS Department of Education
Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis
Your required educational credentials must have been awarded by an educational institution accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the United States (U.S.) Department of Education/Secretary of Education
Candidates selected for appointment must provide an original document to prove their citizenship and/or legal right to work in the United States
