Documentary Producer / Editor
Commune Media, Inc. is seeking a freelance Producer / Editor for an edutainment documentary project about sexual wellness in midlife. The role involves understanding the narrative goals, participating in production, and editing footage to create an engaging story that reflects the original creative vision.
Responsibilities
Understand the project’s treatment, themes, and narrative intent
Identify story arcs, emotional beats, and connective tissue across unscripted footage
Efficiently review and organize large volumes of material post-shoot
Assemble a cohesive, engaging 30-60 minute cut that reflects the original creative vision
Iterate on structure, pacing, and tone in collaboration with creative leadership
Support pre-production planning to ensure story needs are captured on set
Lead the process of casting personal, emotional stories from real people
Participate in select shoots to help guide coverage and story capture
Flag story opportunities or gaps during production that may affect the edit
Maintain clean editorial workflows and organized media structures
Communicate clearly about story direction, progress, and challenges
Collaborate closely with a small, creative team in an evolving documentary process
Qualification
Required
Experience as a Producer / Editor or Editor with strong story-producing instincts
Experience shaping mid-length documentary pieces
Demonstrated ability to synthesize complex themes into clear narrative structure
High comfort level working independently, and the ability to take clear creative direction
Proficiency in Adobe Premiere Pro
Organized, thoughtful, and editorially decisive
Preferred
On-set experience in small documentary or branded-content crews
Proficiency in Adobe Productions
Background in wellness, culture, or impact-driven storytelling
