The Alliance for American Leadership (A4AL) is a nonpartisan coalition of foreign policy experts and young professionals dedicated to revitalizing American leadership through strategic investments in development. They are currently seeking a Communications Director to set the communications agenda, oversee press strategy, and manage a volunteer team.

Government Relations

Responsibilities

Set the 90-day and quarterly communications agenda (themes, campaigns, audiences, channels) aligned to program and policy goals
Approve core narratives, talking points, and editorial guardrails; ensure plain, precise, nonpartisan language
Oversee press strategy (proactive and rapid response), greenlight statements/releases, and prepare principals for interviews/briefings
Ensure each platform has a purpose (e.g., LinkedIn = policy reach; Facebook = awareness/ads) and that content is scheduled, cleared (≥ 7 days), and measured
Maintain approval workflows, editorial calendar, and version control with the Ops Manager; require after-action notes on primary outputs
Manage the Deputy and staff leads; set expectations, mentor emerging communicators, and model professional standards for a volunteer team
Review monthly analytics (media mentions, engagement quality, list growth, fundraising signals) and adjust plans accordingly; brief the Executive Director at milestones
Coordinate with Policy/Legislative/Development to ensure communications support policy windows, coalition work, and fundraising needs

Required

Demonstrated experience owning a comms/media strategy in a policy, nonprofit, or advocacy setting
Strong editorial judgment; can turn complex policy into clear, actionable messaging
Comfort managing volunteers: sets crisp expectations, mentors, and protects against burnout
Familiarity with press relations, digital analytics, and content governance (approval workflows, calendars, style/tone)
Commitment to A4AL's nonpartisan posture and to communicating impact
