Generator Technician I

North Carolina State University is seeking a Generator Technician I to support the Generator Operations Team. This role is responsible for the operation, maintenance, testing, and repair of emergency generators and associated electrical equipment critical to campus safety and continuity.

Responsibilities

Operate, maintain, exercise, test, and repair emergency generators, transfer switches, and associated connections across all campuses
Troubleshoot generator system issues to determine root causes, develop repair methods, identify parts requirements, and establish repair priorities and schedules
Perform inspections of electrical system equipment and facilities to assess condition, identify maintenance needs, and recommend repair priorities
Complete scheduled preventive and predictive maintenance on emergency generators and automatic transfer switch gears
Conduct electronic diagnostics, testing, and repairs on generator systems and related equipment
Resolve standard and complex generator issues efficiently to minimize downtime
Coordinate and communicate with generator vendors and service providers to support maintenance and repair efforts
Maintain accurate documentation related to inspections, maintenance, and repairs
Communicate effectively with supervisors, team members, and campus stakeholders
Regularly perform physically demanding work requiring climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions, with or without reasonable accommodation
Work is conducted in a variety of environments and may involve exposure to extreme heat or cold, noise, vibration, atmospheric conditions, hazardous situations, and frequent working in confined or close quarters
This is an essential position and may be required to work during University closures, including holidays or emergency situations, to support critical operations
Overtime may be required
Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the organization and evolving priorities

Qualification

Required

Associate's Degree in Electronics; or an equivalent combination of training and experience
North Carolina driver's license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained

Preferred

Experience in all phases of construction, maintenance or repair of emergency generators
Skill in troubleshooting, testing, and performing preventive and corrective maintenance on generators and electrical systems using electronic diagnostic tools, meters, and test equipment
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical documentation to support installation, maintenance, and repair activities
Must be skilled in the use of tools, materials and equipment of electrical trades
Working knowledge is required of all applicable codes, safety precautions and methods of installation and repair
