Homologation Engineer, Semi

Responsibilities

Lead homologation and compliance strategy for Tesla Semi and other heavy-duty platforms for commercial operations in the United States (federal and state, including CARB and EPA); Canada (federal and provincial); and Europe (UNECE frameworks and individual approval)
Single-handedly manage end-to-end homologation programs: from preparation and documentation to final approvals, certifications, and audits (all with minimal oversight)
Work closely with the Testing team to plan and execute testing, evaluate their processes, review results for accuracy on the applicable requirements, and sign off on test reports to ensure compliance
Monitor, interpret, and anticipate changes in FMCSA, FMVSS, NHTSA, UNECE, SAE, ISO, CARB, EPA, and other regulatory frameworks to inform design, execution, and compliance decisions
Ownership on development of requirements, tracing and verification, audit readiness, independent certification (if any) and post-approval running changes and maintenance of compliance demonstration
Support internal and external audits and investigations while implementing and leading a strong mechanism for corrective actions and ongoing enhancements
Construct and maintain compliance reporting and archive systems providing a single source of truth for regulatory evidence in the US, Canada, and Europe
Partner across cross-functional teams with Engineering, Operations, Legal, Policy, and other partners on embedding safety and compliance throughout the product lifecycle and deployment strategy
Act as Tesla's subject matter expert and external representative with regulators and standards bodies to resolve investigation/surveillance activities related to compliance (if any)

Required

Bachelor's degree in engineering, science, or related technical field or equivalent experience
3+ years' experience with compliance, regulatory or systems engineering positions, with proven knowledge of effective homologation initiatives for heavy-duty vehicles and the ability to manage programs independently
Hands-on understanding of automotive and heavy-duty vehicle regulatory codes and standards, including FMVSS, FMCSA, CMVSS, UNECE, CARB, and EPA with focus on understanding and navigating state-level regulations in the US as well as Canada
In depth experience in homologation, type approval, and certification of heavy-duty commercial vehicles in the US (federal and state, including CARB and EPA), Canada (federal and provincial), and Europe compliance processes
Demonstrated experience with non-functional requirements, root-cause analysis, and corrective action planning on a multi-jurisdictional basis
Strong communication skills; capable of explaining complex regulatory principles to engineers, attorneys, executives, and external stakeholders
Demonstrated impact with cross-functional stakeholders and externally for the company as the delegate to regulators, standards bodies, or coalitions
