Laboratory Assistant II

Supports patient registration and third‑party reimbursement requirements
Maintains department supplies and helps manage customer supply orders
Demonstrates knowledge of specimen collection, handling, and processing
Performs all departmental functions, including:
Specimen processing
Transportation
Billing
Reference testing
Scheduling
Downtime procedures
Use of laboratory and hospital information systems
Delivers high‑quality customer service and responds proactively to customer needs
Processes pathology specimens
Trains new or existing staff as required
Works flexible hours to meet department needs
Communicates effectively and cooperatively with team members and customers
Assists with laboratory equipment maintenance and cleaning (centrifuges, refrigerators, etc.)
Follows all policies, procedures, regulatory requirements, and accreditation standards
Maintains reliable and punctual attendance in compliance with Orlando Health policies
Ensures adherence to all Orlando Health policies and procedures
Actively participates in the laboratory Quality Improvement Program
Supports productivity, customer satisfaction, and department goals
Documents specimen quality issues accurately
Adheres to infection control and safety practices; maintains a clean, organized workspace
Maintains confidentiality of all patient, hospital, and departmental information
Performs filing, report handling, and requisition management
Assists with charting and report distribution (phone, fax, or electronic)
Reads and understands physician laboratory test orders
Schedules Pathologists, Histotechnicians, or Transport Representatives when needed
Assists with bone marrow collection and processing
May perform phlebotomy if competency is approved and on file
Qualification
Required
High School Diploma or GED required
Two (2) years of laboratory experience or patient care experience, OR Current students enrolled in a science‑related field (e.g., Nursing, Medical Technology, Pre‑Med, or related clinical program) may substitute up to two years of required experience
Supports patient registration and third‑party reimbursement requirements
Maintains department supplies and helps manage customer supply orders
Demonstrates knowledge of specimen collection, handling, and processing
Performs all departmental functions, including: Specimen processing, Transportation, Billing, Reference testing, Scheduling, Downtime procedures, Use of laboratory and hospital information systems
Delivers high‑quality customer service and responds proactively to customer needs
