InternThe City of St. George is seeking a Horticulture Intern to provide specialized, hands-on care for plant material, turf, and landscape features within the City's parks and facilities. This role includes responsibilities such as planting, maintenance, and repair of irrigation systems, as well as assisting with pest management and event setups.
Government Administration
Responsibilities
Assists in the planting, care, maintenance, and seasonal pruning of trees, shrubs, flowers, and groundcover
Performs routine maintenance and repair of irrigation systems and assists with the scheduling and programming of watering cycles for turf and landscape beds
Assists with integrated pest management (IPM) activities, including scouting, plant health inspections, and the safe application of fertilizers or pesticides under supervision
Participates in the maintenance of turf, including mowing, aeration, dethatching, and top-dressing
Maintains, cleans, and performs minor repairs on landscape features, park facilities, and equipment to assure proper functioning
Operates mowers, trimmers, blowers, and other power equipment incidental to the job
Assists with set up and take down for special events, such as the St. George Marathon
Performs other related duties as required
Qualification
Required
Possess a valid driver license
A valid Utah Driver License must be obtained within 60 days of hire and be maintained throughout employment
Basic principles and practices of horticulture, including plant identification, planting, pruning, and landscape maintenance
The use and maintenance of hand and power tools and equipment common to landscape maintenance
Operation of irrigation systems and basic water management practices
Standard safety precautions
Work with minimum supervision, and understand and follow general work instructions
Perform outdoor manual labor for extended periods of time
Operate equipment in a safe and efficient manner
Follow instructions for the safe handling and application of chemicals, fertilizers, and pesticides
