Responsibilities
Own and evolve the DBT transformation layer supporting the Retail and Operations domain
Build and maintain dimensional models and curated “gold” datasets for store performance, sales, returns, inventory, fulfillment, operational KPIs, etc
Establish and maintain a single source of truth & a ubiquitous language for core Retail/Operations metrics (definitions, granularity, business rules, edge cases, etc.)
Ensure models are performant and maintainable (incremental strategies, efficient SQL, Domain Driven Design, etc.)
Develop strong domain fluency in Retail & Operations data (order lifecycle, fulfillment events, returns/refunds/exchanges, inventory movements, purchasing/receiving, financial posting concepts, etc.)
Translate operational workflows into durable data models that reflect real-world processes and reduce ambiguity for business users
Partner with Operations/Retail stakeholders to align on operational definitions and a ubiquitous language
Work closely with the BI Engineer to enable high-quality reporting in Power BI, ensuring datasets are well-structured for semantic modeling and consistent self-service usage
Provide stable, documented marts that minimize one-off reporting logic and reduce metric drift
Implement and maintain DBT tests (unique/not null/relationships, custom assertions, freshness checks, etc.) to build confidence in downstream reporting
Proactively identify data anomalies and work with upstream owners to resolve root causes (schema changes, integration gaps, process changes)
Maintain DBT documentation (model descriptions, column-level definitions, lineage) and contribute to a data dictionary for Retail/Operations
Create “how to use” guidance for core marts (intended grain, joins, metric definitions, known caveats, etc.)
Qualification
Required
2+ years experience as an Analytics Engineer, BI Engineer (modeling-heavy), Data Analyst (advanced), or similar role with substantial modeling ownership
Expert SQL and strong proficiency with DBT (model layering, macros, tests, docs, exposures)
Proficiency in Python, including the ability to write ad hoc scripts for data validation/automation and to use Python for exploratory analysis
Proficiency in Power BI (DAX, Star Schema)
Experience working with transactional data and comfort modeling transactional systems (orders, inventory, purchasing, receiving, returns, etc.)
Experience with modern warehouses (e.g., Snowflake, BigQuery) and production modeling practices (git, code reviews, CI/CD)
Strong communication skills—able to translate business operations into clean, enforceable data definitions
Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively across functional teams
Self-motivated with a strong desire to learn, adapt, and continuously improve
Demonstrated ability to execute efficiently and effectively
Preferred
Experience with ERP/retail systems (e.g., Full Circle, Dynamics 365, SAP, Oracle, etc.) and/or retail OMS/POS platforms (Teamwork, Lightspeed, Shopify POS, etc.)
Familiarity with data quality/observability practices beyond basic tests (freshness monitoring, anomaly detection)
Familiarity w/ Domain Driven Design concepts
