Interim Financial Controller
Highspring is seeking an Interim Financial Controller who will oversee all accounting operations, financial reporting, and compliance functions for their property management portfolio. This role is hands-on and requires a strong understanding of real estate accounting practices while implementing process improvements until a permanent controller is hired.
Responsibilities
Manage and oversee all day-to-day accounting activities, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger management
Ensure the timely and accurate preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in compliance with U.S. GAAP and regulatory standards
Lead and streamline the month-end and year-end closing processes, including balance sheet reconciliations and variance analyses
Monitor and manage daily cash flow, including cash position reporting, liquidity optimization, and banking relationships
Coordinate and serve as the primary point of contact for external auditors and tax advisors, ensuring all required schedules and documentation are prepared accurately and on time
Oversee all regulatory filings and ensure adherence to partnership agreements and lender requirements
Evaluate, implement, and document robust internal controls and standardized operating procedures to safeguard company assets and improve operational efficiency and accuracy
Identify and lead initiatives for system enhancements and automation (e.g., Yardi, MRI, etc.)
Assist in the development of annual budgets and financial forecasts, tracking performance against budget and providing insightful variance analysis to senior leadership
Handle property management-specific accounting issues such as common area maintenance (CAM) reconciliations, lease accounting (ASC 842), and revenue recognition
Provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship to the existing accounting team, fostering a collaborative and high-performing work environment
Provide data and analysis for transaction due diligence (acquisitions/dispositions), investor reporting, and other ad hoc reporting required by private equity ownership
Lead integration efforts(open balance sheet, chart of accounts etc.) post close for newly acquired businesses
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in Accounting is required
CPA certification is highly preferred
Experience with Netsuite is required
Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive accounting experience
At least 3 years in a real estate/property management context
Prior experience in a private equity-backed environment is a significant plus
