Special Deputy Attorney General

The North Carolina Department of Justice is responsible for representing the state and defending the rights of its people. The Special Deputy Attorney General will oversee criminal appeals, manage appellate advocacy, and provide legal support to attorneys within the department.

Responsibilities

Assign criminal appeals in the North Carolina Appellate Courts to North Carolina Department of Justice attorneys who are on the brief rotation
Review and summarize all North Carolina appellate court decisions
Represent the State of North Carolina in criminal appellate cases by researching legal issues and law, drafting briefs, motions, motion responses, petitions, petition responses and other filings in the North Carolina and federal appellate courts
Ensure consistency and fairness in appellate advocacy by tracking relevant precedent, and helping to oversee coordinated, strategic approach to the State’s positions in appellate courts
Collect, track and maintain data metrics for all North Carolina criminal appeals and criminal appellate case assignments to attorneys on the criminal brief rotation
Contact the designated District Attorney, District Attorney representative or Departmental attorney regarding their criminal appellate cases
Assist North Carolina Department of Justice attorneys and state District Attorneys with criminal appeals
Provide appellate advocacy training and legal resources to North Carolina Department of Justice attorneys and criminal justice stakeholders
Review prospective State’s appeals
Maintain a victim notification system for criminal appellate cases

Required

Licensed to practice law by the North Carolina State Bar
Four years of progressively responsible professional legal experience
Criminal appellate practice experience in the North Carolina and federal appellate courts
Strong legal research, writing and oral communication skills
Experience managing a high-volume criminal appellate caseload and meeting multiple deadlines
