Medical Assistant Associate/Assistant (Internal Applicants Only)

Responsibilities

Administer common medications according to unit guidelines and providers' orders and as delegated by providers and nurses including immunizations, Vitamin-12, and bronchodilators via nebulizer mist
Perform allergy testing and other complex diagnostic tests, including those requiring complex specimen collections and complex equipment
Provide routine but complex instructions for patient procedures and treatments, according to unit guidelines and as delegated by providers and nurses
Assist with complex procedures, requiring knowledge of complex and varied equipment including LEEP and laser
Provide in-service training and precepting as directed
Problem-solve issues related to the retrieval of medical information
Coordinate clinical services provided to patients according to payer guidelines (e.g., routing of lab specimens, ordering durable medical equipment)
Develop and recommend changes in patient care activities to improve the quality of patient care services
Process patient care orders using the electronic ordering system may be required in certain areas
Perform other related duties as assigned, which includes, but is not limited to the following: Obtain pre-visit vitals such as blood pressure, pulse (radial and apical), height, weight, and temperature measurements
Coordinate medication refill requests and prior authorizations
Triage and route patient portal messages to the appropriate clinical teams
Assist with Environment of Care regulatory readiness activities, checks, and audits
Obtain and document orthostatic vital signs
Conduct EKG testing
Coordinate medical record requests for patients, internal providers and clinical staff, and external individuals/organizations
Send, receive, and route administrative forms, clinical forms and other documents
Point of care Urine Drug Screen (UDS) testing
Obtain urine clean catch specimens
Obtain breath alcohol measurements
Conduct breathalyzer accuracy checks
Stocking and management of emergency equipment (ex: AED) and Red Bag supplies
Management and disposal of sharps containers
Patient chaperoning
Obtain oxygen saturation using pulse oximeter
Administer oxygen
Low level cleaning and disinfection of exam room, medical equipment, and supplies
Assist with contact precautions for patients with infection prevention risks
Assist with the disposal of leftover or expired medications
Manage and check eye wash station cleanliness
Assist in Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) procedures

Required

Completion of a Medical Assistant Program or equivalent combination of education and experience
Moderate standing/walking, as well as, lifting, positioning, pushing and/or transferring patients
High school diploma or GED
1-3 years of experience
Knowledge of basic medical terminology
0-1 years of experience
Some office experience

Preferred

Prior medical assistant experience in an ambulatory care clinical setting is preferred
Enthusiastic, reliable, hard-working, flexible, detail-oriented, and positive minded individual with demonstrated skills in interpersonal and customer service skills
Ability to take direction from a multiple number of clinicians and supervisor and work efficiently in a busy environment
Excellent time management and organizational skills, consistently uses available time effectively
Competency in computer programs, telephone etiquette, and other office procedures
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
Ability to work well within a team setting
Participate in in-service programs for the medical staff
Must have excellent attendance and punctuality
Certificate of completion from a Medical Assistant program
Recent ambulatory medical assistant experience (within last 2-3 years)
Experience with MiChart (Epic)
Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Teams, and other Microsoft 365 programs
Knowledge of Michigan Medicine Policies, Procedures, and Guidelines
Additional formal education in a health care field
