Managing Attorney

Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government (LFUCG) is seeking a Managing Attorney to handle complex legal matters and advise elected officials and management. The role includes managing and supervising all attorneys in the Department of Law and ensuring compliance with legal standards.

Responsibilities

Provides advice on the most complex legal matters faced by LFUCG
Meets with and advises elected officials, the chief administrative officer, and the highest-level management of the LFUCG
Represents and oversees the representation of LFUCG in state and federal courts and administrative hearing boards, and monitors cases to determine whether to authorize settlement
Reviews and drafts complex/comprehensive ordinances, resolutions, contracts, and other legal documents; ensures that ordinances, resolutions, opinions, and other work product of the Department are accurately, competently, and timely provided
Researches complex legal issues and ensures compliance with federal and state laws
Provides feedback, assistance, and advice to the Commissioner of Law in all areas related to the management of the Department of Law
Manages the daily workflow of matters referred to the Department of Law, including assigning matters for handling, reviewing legal work, addressing issues that arise from such assignments, and holding regular meetings
Monitors and analyzes new developments in the law, including court opinions to assess the impact on LFUCG; reviews bills and draft legislation, if necessary, for the General Assembly
Manages, supervises, and trains all attorneys and attorneys senior in the Department of Law, and manages and supervises other staff in the Department of Law

Required

Juris Doctor
Six years of related experience
Kentucky Bar License
License to practice law in federal courts
All positions require drug testing and background check before employment and may require a post-job offer physical as stated in Ordinances 21-14(b), 22-13 and 23-16
