ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN I/II

The City of El Cerrito is seeking to fill an Engineering Technician I or II position in the Engineering Division of the Public Works Department. This role involves providing technical engineering support, coordinating and inspecting utility work, and assisting with various engineering projects.

Responsibilities

Performs skilled technical engineering support work; prepares, updates, reproduces, and distributes documentation, drawings, maps, and files related to engineering and construction activities
Prepares or assists in the preparation of and/or interprets specifications, plans, permits, estimates, and reports pertaining to the construction, maintenance, and operation of a variety of engineering, land development, utility, and other Capital Improvement Program (CIP) projects
Updates and maintains engineering data management systems, including utilizes GIS software to create and modify various plans, maps, and illustrative graphics, such as charts, illustrations, and graphs for reports, drawings for design manuals, and other projects
Provides City information and data for use by the public, other City departments, and outside agencies including engineers, land surveyors, developers, utility companies, other municipalities, and federal, state, and county governments; responds to inquiries regarding requirements relative to the construction, alteration, and maintenance of engineering conditions
Performs inspections relating to public works done by utility companies, private contractors, and utility companies; enforces compliance with plans, specifications, City policies, and permit conditions; and administers and monitors permits for such work
Receives, administers, reviews and issues permits for work in the public right-of-way
Coordinates the operation of utility work in the public right-of-way
Performs data collection in the field; operates field survey equipment to assist in the design of engineering improvements and projects; enters, reviews, and updates in database; compiles data and prepares reports
Participates in the preparation, filing, retrieval, and distribution of a variety of engineering maps, grading plans, improvement plans, and related documents
Receives, tags and logs, and reviews submitted engineering plans, maps, and related documents for plan check including review of insurance; routes documents to consultants or developers for preceding and following plan review; tracks status of plan checks and original documents; advises parties of revisions and assists with the development and issuance of project conditions
Performs complex engineering calculations and mathematical computations, including construction quantities and cost estimates of capital improvement projects
Performs field verifications of existing infrastructure assets; makes field checks of project sites as needed; performs title searches, research right-of-way and easements based on legal description
Prepares written correspondence, documents, and presentation materials, including photos, graphs, exhibits, maps, and other materials for Council reports, department projects, and reports
Interprets and drafts legal description drawings; prepares sketches of designs from instructions and design data; interprets and converts survey notes to various types of drawings

Required

Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade supplemented by some college level coursework in engineering, drafting, surveying, mathematics, or a related field
Engineering Technician I: No experience required
Engineering Technician II: Two (2) years of increasingly responsible technical paraprofessional engineering experience, drafting, surveying, or related field; including the use of CAD and GIS software
Possession of a current and valid California Driver's License and satisfactory driving record to be maintained throughout employment. An out-of-state license may be used during the hiring process, but a valid California Driver's License must be obtained prior to appointment
Perform technical engineering duties in support of engineering, mapping, and construction projects
Prepare, update, read, and interpret engineering designs, plans, maps, drawings, blueprints, specifications, subdivision maps, and related documents
Conduct site inspections and field work, including taking measurements and safely operating required tools, instruments, vehicles, and equipment
Perform accurate mathematical and engineering calculations
Use Computer-Aided Drafting (AutoCAD) and GIS software to create, edit, analyze, and plot geographic and engineering data
Gather, compile, and analyze data for engineering studies, including property ownership and valuation information
Apply applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies, and standards while organizing work independently, meeting deadlines, communicating effectively, and exercising sound judgment

Tuition Reimbursement: Cost reimbursement up to the maximum of $3,500/fiscal year for work related studies.
Bilingual Pay: The City pays $2,600 per year to employees who are bilingual and who have passed a proficiency test provided by the City.
Alternating Work Schedule: This position typically works 37.5 hours per week with every other Friday off.
Wellness Program: Access to an array of wellness programs offered by the City such as massage days, fitness and meditation classes, Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
