Assistant District Attorney
The Tennessee District Attorneys General Conference is seeking qualified attorneys for the role of Assistant District Attorney in Memphis, Tennessee. This position involves prosecuting a variety of criminal cases, contributing to public safety, and developing litigation and trial advocacy skills in a collaborative environment.
Responsibilities
Prosecute felony, misdemeanor, juvenile, and specialized criminal cases
Review police reports and determine appropriate criminal charges
Prepare cases for Grand Jury presentation and trial
Develop trial strategy, conduct plea negotiations, and determine sentencing recommendations
Interview witnesses, secure expert testimony, and prepare cases for court
Handle pre-trial, trial, sentencing, and post-trial proceedings
Communicate case status with victims, law enforcement, and defense counsel
Participate in continuing legal education and professional development
Provide training and support to less experienced attorneys, as assigned
Qualification
Required
Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
Licensed to practice law in the State of Tennessee (or eligible through reciprocity)
Demonstrated ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex legal documents, statutes, case law, and procedural rules
Strong written communication skills, including the ability to draft legal pleadings, motions, and written advocacy clearly and persuasively
Strong oral communication skills, with the ability to present arguments and information effectively to judges, juries, attorneys, law enforcement, and the public
Proven reasoning and analytical skills, including the ability to define legal issues, evaluate facts, apply law to complex situations, and draw sound conclusions
Ability to exercise professional judgment and discretion in high-stakes and sensitive matters
Preferred
Prior experience in criminal prosecution or criminal litigation
Courtroom experience, including motion practice, hearings, or trial work
Experience conducting legal research and applying case law to charging decisions and trial strategy
Demonstrated ability to manage a caseload independently while meeting deadlines and procedural requirements
Experience interacting professionally with victims, witnesses, law enforcement agencies, and defense counsel
Experience presenting persuasive oral arguments in contested or complex matters
