Assistant Controller
Johnson & Bell, Trial Lawyers provides trusted legal counsel serving clients in state and federal courts. They are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Assistant Controller to support the firm's Controller in managing the firm’s accounting and financial operations, ensuring accurate financial reporting and overseeing payroll and accounts payable functions.

Responsibilities
Assist the Controller in managing the monthly close process, including preparation of financial statements and variance analysis
Process payroll and ensure compliance with applicable regulations
Coordinate and oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, and billing functions to ensure accuracy and timeliness
Reconcile general ledger accounts and assist with audits, tax filings, and other regulatory reporting as needed
Monitor cash flow, track expenses, and prepare financial reports to support decision-making by firm leadership
Develop and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls in partnership with the Controller
Supervise and mentor accounting staff, providing guidance, training, and performance feedback
Assist in budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning initiatives, including ad hoc financial analyses
Collaborate with HR, IT, and other operational departments to streamline financial and administrative processes
Ensure compliance with all relevant accounting standards, tax requirements, and firm policies
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required
Minimum of 5–8 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in a law firm or professional services environment
Strong knowledge of accounting principles, payroll processes, billing, and financial reporting
Experience managing accounts payable, accounts receivable, and reconciliations
Proven leadership skills with experience supervising and developing staff
Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple priorities
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across departments
Proficiency with accounting software and law firm management systems
Ability to handle confidential financial information with discretion and professionalism
Preferred
CPA or equivalent certification preferred
Experience with legal-specific systems (e.g., SurePoint, NetDocuments, or similar) preferred
