The North Carolina Department of Justice is responsible for representing the state and its agencies in legal matters. The Attorney V role involves leading complex civil litigation, mentoring junior attorneys, and providing advanced legal advice on constitutional and civil rights issues.

Responsibilities
Lead complex civil litigation in federal and state courts, including trials and appeals
Develop case strategy, assess risk, and execute motions and trial plans
Draft and review pleadings, briefs, and settlement agreements with precision
Conduct depositions, hearings, mediations, and oral arguments
Review and approve work product of junior attorneys for accuracy and compliance
Mentor attorneys on litigation strategy, writing, and courtroom advocacy
Provide advanced legal advice to DOJ and client agencies on constitutional and civil rights matters
Support Section leadership with caseload management and strategic initiatives
Qualification
Required
Licensed to practice law by the North Carolina State Bar
Five years of progressively responsible professional legal experience
Federal litigation experience, including trial work
Formal supervisory and/or informal mentorship experience with respect to attorneys, paralegals and administrative support professionals
Ease around high-volume litigation and tight deadlines with high impact
Public safety and/or law enforcement defense experience
