Quality Technician

The Quality Technician is responsible for executing the acceptance, sampling, and estimation of raw materials with a focus on quality, supporting the Quality Team Manager in establishing operational excellence.

Responsibilities

Assess, accept, and book incoming goods; sample metal-containing raw materials
Estimate metal content and operate sampling equipment
Perform stock taking, statistical analysis, and documentation of raw materials
Support Quality Team and Sample Preparation in process optimization
Manage claims professionally and operate forklifts or similar equipment safely
Communicate effectively with internal teams (Production, Logistics, Laboratory, Maintenance) and external suppliers
Coordinate with purchasing, customer service, and management to resolve operational or quality challenges
Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and quality regulations (DOT, OSHA, company standards)
Support warehouse optimization and implement continuous improvement initiatives
Track KPIs, identify corrective actions, and optimize operational efficiency
Provide technical leadership in material pre-processing and sample preparation
Guide onboarding, training, and knowledge transfer across departments and shifts
Motivate, coach, and evaluate team members; foster a culture of feedback and continuous improvement
Ensure team adherence to health, safety, and environmental standards
Structure, monitor, and optimize workflows; benchmark processes and maintain documentation
Implement SPC practices and support Quality Team projects
Assist in budget planning, cost monitoring, and investment project coordination (CAPEX/OPEX)
Define, monitor, and report relevant KPIs
Support creation of metrics, reports, and departmental policies
Identify risks (safety, technical, environmental, financial) and implement corrective actions
Act as backup for other supervisors and participate in plant commissioning or optimization projects
Order and coordinate external services and repairs
Collaborate cross-functionally to ensure lean operations
Support HR with audits and employee performance strategies
Participate in lean manufacturing initiatives; pursue Six Sigma training as needed

Required

Bachelor's degree in a related field or 3 years equivalent experience in a related role
Open to obtaining additional certification at the company's request
Minimum 5 years in sampling, estimation, or sample preparation; proven experience as a Quality Technician
Strong understanding of chemical/metallurgical processes and workplace safety
Proficient in data analysis, statistical reporting, and ERP systems (SAP)
Solid knowledge of environmental, safety, and labor regulations (DOT, OSHA)
Experience working in project teams and across all workforce levels
Strong computer skills (MS Office, email, ERP)
Detail-oriented, quality-focused, and able to thrive in fast-paced environments
Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving abilities
Ability to motivate teams, manage conflict, and drive continuous improvement
Analytical, strategic, and solution-focused with a proactive, self-driven approach
Passion for metals and commitment to personal and professional development
Must be willing and physically able to walk/work in, observe and spend time in a smelter environment
Must be willing and physically able to work in intense heat situations
Able to sit, stand and walk for varying periods of time in the plant
Must be able to perform the following: walking, standing, climbing, pulling, and or pushing, carrying, grasping, using hand-to-finger movement, balancing, reaching, twisting, turning, and stooping
May occasionally be required to reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
Good physical condition with the ability to lift to 50 lbs. occasionally
Good hand/eye coordination, motor skills, 20/20 corrected vision and hearing within the normal range
Ability to respond quickly and efficiently to all safety needs on the floor or in the office areas
Must wear all required PPE when in protected areas
Willing and physically able to travel domestically and/or internationally, if requested

Preferred

Knowledge of lean/process improvement methodologies; APICS certification a plus
Experience with plant start-ups, interpreting technical prints and layouts
