Trades Generalist

New York State Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation is seeking a Trades Generalist for Shirley Chisholm State Park. The role involves performing a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance, repair, installation, and construction tasks across mechanical, building, motor equipment, and electrical trades while leading a team in the maintenance of park equipment.

Government Administration

Responsibilities

Lead a team of skilled trade generalists or unskilled staff in preventative and corrective maintenance of the park’s fleet of equipment including gators, push mowers, tractors, trucks, passenger vehicles and trail repair
Complete repairs on various pieces of heavy equipment or small-engine devices
Plan and lay out projects, supervise and train others as well as read and interpret plans
May be assigned to other duties including but not limited to direct facility maintenance, leading operations as needed, which may include supervising lower-level staff, and operating various equipment for grounds care & maintenance
May be responsible for directing park operations in the absence of Park management

Required

Candidates must have four years of full-time experience in a trade under a skilled tradesperson, which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in skilled trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment. If not licensed at the time of appointment, the appointee must obtain a driver's license without restrictions or conditions within the term of probation
Must be able to read and interpret blueprints
Must be able to supervise others and to act independently with a minimum of supervision
Must have ability to understand and carry out written and/or verbal instructions
Must have knowledge of standard safety practices
Candidate is expected to periodically support the New York City Region's park and operational needs, including special assignments at other parks and emergency management tasks as needed
