Finance/Accounting Intern: Financial & Business Services

The Texas Department of Transportation is seeking a Finance/Accounting Intern to join their Financial & Business Services Branch. The role involves performing entry-level administrative and technical support work, including customer service inquiries, financial data entry, and maintaining accurate financial records.

Government Administration

Responsibilities

Respond to customer service inquiries via phone and coordinate with vendors and internal teams to verify direct deposits, warrant cancellations, and fraud verification requests within required timeframes
Collects, stamps, scans, and distributes mail, checks, and accounting documents daily, logging financial items accurately by established deadlines
Processes and distributes agency warrant (checks) and tracks special handling instructions with attention to detail and minimal errors
Support assigned tasks and projects, ensuring timely and accurate completion in alignment with established deadlines
Participate in team meetings, check-ins, and training sessions to strengthen communication and collaboration skills
Assist with financial data entry, transaction recording, and maintaining accurate financial records using spreadsheets or accounting software
Represent the Financial Management Division by volunteering at on-site events
Update standard operating procedures (SOPs) and training logs to ensure documentation reflects current practices
Help manage office equipment inventory (e.g., laptops, iPhones) by updating logs and preparing issuance checklists
Perform other duties as assigned

Required

Must be a student in high school or other educational institution or accepted into a college, university or educational institution
Must be at least 16 years of age, a student currently enrolled in high school or any institution of higher education to include a trade/vocational school
Apply technical skills using systems such as Microsoft 365 (Teams, Planner, SharePoint, etc.), similar to PeopleSoft, Tableau, and SQL
Communicate effectively
Follow verbal and written instructions accurately
Adhere to applicable safety standards, practices, and procedures
Handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and integrity
Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs
Sitting - prolonged periods of time
Standing-prolonged periods of time
Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading

Preferred

Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration, etc. highly preferred
