Legal Assistant

The DC Department of Human Resources is one of the nation’s premier civil rights enforcement agencies, and they are currently seeking a talented individual for a Legal Assistant position in the Hearing Unit. This role involves providing legal and administrative support to the Unit’s Administrative Judges and managing case files while ensuring efficient adjudication services.

Responsibilities

Assists and supports the Chief Administrative Judge, Administrative Judges, and Commissioners in the performance of duties designed to ensure that the Unit provides fair and efficient adjudication services
Supports the day-to-day administration of the Unit’s docket by entering and maintaining accurate docket data in the Unit’s case management system
Manages hardcopy and electronic case files
Prepares, maintains, delivers, and retrieves case files and documents in accordance with policies and procedures developed by the Chief ALJ and OHR
Interacts and communicates with the public orally and in writing when providing customer service relating to the adjudication of cases by the Unit
Without providing legal advice, answers a wide range of questions from the public regarding calendaring, filing procedures, and case status

Required

One (1) year of specialized experience which is directly related to the position
Specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression
Ability to provide legal and administrative support to the Hearing Unit Administrative Judges and the Commission
Experience managing hardcopy and electronic case files
Ability to prepare, maintain, deliver, and retrieve case files and documents in accordance with policies and procedures
Strong oral and written communication skills for interacting with the public
Ability to answer a wide range of questions from the public regarding calendaring, filing procedures, and case status
