Material/Process Inspector I or II

The Texas Department of Transportation is seeking qualified professionals to join their team as Material/Process Inspectors. These positions involve performing material tests and manufacturing process inspections to ensure compliance with quality assurance programs and support construction and maintenance activities throughout the district.

Government Administration

Responsibilities

Coordinates test and inspection results with engineers, inspectors and material producers and suppliers
Maintains and calibrates equipment
Performs tests and inspection duties
Records test data on worksheets and performs calculations to convert raw data into specific units of measurement
Secures, logs in and prepares samples of raw materials or manufactured materials at various stages of production for testing
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned
Handles material or production problems referred by less experienced inspectors
Prepares and maintains inspection or test reports and issues material reports
Reviews plans and material specifications for changes in material requirements
Coordinates core drill or auger rig operations
Maintains inventory of test supplies
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned

Required

High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies
Material/Process Inspector I: No experience required (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent)
Material/Process Inspector II: 1 year Laboratory work, material inspection or other eng-related work (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent)
Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle
Some skill in giving attention to detail and reviewing information to identify any errors and problems; ensuring consistency and clarity of information
Some skill in performing calculations using algebra, trigonometry and geometry
Some skill in using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems
Some skill in maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others
Some knowledge of materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance
Some knowledge of applicable testing methods, processes and procedures
Some knowledge of laboratory testing procedures and methodologies
Proficient skill in using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems
Proficient skill in safely using, operating, and maintaining applicable equipment
Proficient skill in maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others
Some skill in conducting laboratory tests
Some skill in calibrating equipment
Some skill in training in a classroom, office, or field environment
Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
Subject to noise
Subject to vibration
Subject to hazards - moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
Required to wear protective gear - respirator, hard hat, or other devices
Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
Balancing - walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
Crouching - bending body downward and forward by bending leg(s) and spine
Grasping - applying pressure to an object with fingers and palm
Feeling - determining size, shape, temperature or texture of objects
Talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
Hearing - perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication
Close Visual Acuity - work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
Close Visual Acuity - using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts
Visual Acuity - operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment
