Environmental Health & Safety Intern

The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company is an Equal Opportunity Employer seeking undergraduate and graduate students for hands-on experience in environmental health and safety within the construction field. Interns will assist project teams in managing EH&S programs and gain practical experience through various assigned tasks in both office and job site settings.

Responsibilities

Assist in safety onboarding and safety meeting processes
Assist in performing regular job site inspections to identify, document and recommend mitigation of hazardous/potentially hazardous conditions and verify correction actions have been completed
Assist in evaluating various planning/permits such as: Hot Work, Confined Space, Fall Protection, Excavation, Steel Erection, Energized Work, Pre-cast Tilt-Up as examples for effective and appropriate mitigation techniques
Assist in incident investigations to include interviews, data compilation, photographs and completing proper documentation

Required

Open to undergraduate and graduate students interested in gaining hands-on practical experience in the construction environmental health and safety (EH&S) field
Preferred candidates should be pursuing a degree in environmental health and safety management or a closely related field of study
Transportation is required
Responsible team membership: commitment to the Project team, participation with company expectations, dedication to improving the safety culture throughout the business unit
Professional communications skills verbally as well as in written format
Assist in safety onboarding and safety meeting processes
Assist in performing regular job site inspections to identify, document and recommend mitigation of hazardous/potentially hazardous conditions and verify correction actions have been completed
Assist in evaluating various planning/permits such as: Hot Work, Confined Space, Fall Protection, Excavation, Steel Erection, Energized Work, Pre-cast Tilt-Up as examples for effective and appropriate mitigation techniques
Assist in incident investigations to include interviews, data compilation, photographs and completing proper documentation
Work is conducted in both indoor office settings, and outdoor constructions jobsite settings requiring sitting, standing, walking, typing, carrying, pushing, bending
Occasional lifting of up to 40 lbs
Occasionally will climb stairs, ladders, etc
Ability to wear personal protective equipment is required (including but not limited to, steel toed boots, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, hardhat, vest, etc.)
You should be familiar with the following software: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Exchange, etc
Proven ability to plan, schedule and coordinate subcontract trades is paramount along with ability to interface well with Owners, Architects, Engineers, including the on-site management team
