Marine Mechanic

The N.C. Responsibilities

Repair and overhaul diesel engines which involve the disassembly, inspection and re-assembly of valves, pistons, rings, connecting rods, crankshaft, camshaft, bearings, timing gears and chains, valve mechanisms, injectors, and pumps
Repair and adjust reduction gears, clutches and couplings
Replace propeller shafts and bearings and aligns to the engines
Repair and overhaul fire pumps, bilge pumps and hydraulic pumps
Use of bench grinders, hand grinders, belt sanders, bandsaws, and pneumatic tools
Operation of drill press and hydraulic press
Read, understand and utilize blueprints
Use of common cutting tools
Read conversion charts of fraction to decimal and standard to metric units
Use measuring instruments such as dial calipers, micrometers, depth gauges, radius gauges, multimeter, and telescoping gauges
Performs related duties as required

Required

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma
Three years of progressive experience in the repair of diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, hydraulic, air and electric systems, and components, preferably in the ship repair or shipbuilding industry
Ability to legally operate a motor vehicle
Demonstrated ability to determine the cause of and procedures to follow in repairing malfunctioning equipment

Preferred

Working knowledge of the operating principles of diesel and gasoline engines
Knowledge of the operating principles of reduction gears and hydraulic systems
Knowledge of the operating principles of air and electric control systems
Knowledge of the operating principles of vacuum and pressure pumps
