Responsibilities

Make SAFETY our number one priority using a “Safety First” mentality and leading by example

Prepare high quality calculation and design packages needed to construct substation and transmission facilities using CAD-based tools, based on Southern Company design standards

The Engineer in the Transmission Civil Design organization will be responsible for designing and analyzing new or modified existing substation structures

The Engineer will be expected to perform reinforced concrete foundation design and structural steel analysis/design on an as needed basis

The Engineer will work with other engineers to help in their development and knowledge transfer

Coordinate and communicate with other departments associated with Civil Design

Interact with manufacturers, vendors, and Southern Company committee members to resolve standards and material issues

Provide support to Constructions Services, Substation Construction, Transmission Line Construction, Field Services, Project Management and Substation Maintenance

Perform site visits for projects, including pre-construction meetings, during construction and post-construction

Some overnight travel will be required

Participate in design review meetings

Provide work direction and oversight for designers and drafters

Support Southern Company’s design criteria and standardization effort

Handling multiple tasks simultaneously, setting priorities, and using effective time management and organizational skills to achieve project team goals

Provide assistance as part of a storm restoration team after major storm events in the Southern Company service territory

Required

Bachelor's degree in engineering is required

Working knowledge of AISC, ASCE, ACI codes

Working knowledge of AWS welding standards

Working knowledge of OSHA codes as it relates to steel design

Understanding of ANSYS, MathCAD and STAAD Pro

Understanding of deep foundation design utilizing AllPile, LPILE, FAD Tools

Experience with analyzing steel connections

Experience in reinforced concrete design
