Transportation Engineering Technician III (61033512)

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is responsible for overseeing transportation engineering and maintenance. They are seeking a Transportation Engineering Technician III to review and inspect encroachment permits, ensure compliance with specifications, and manage documentation related to damage claims and permits.

Responsibilities

At Sumter Maintenance, reviews, inspects, and makes approval recommendations for all incoming encroachment permits from private citizens and the local municipalities to include the City of Sumter Water & Sewer Division, Sumter County Public Works, Spectrum, Dominion Energy, Black River Electric, Farmers Telephone, High Hills Rural Water, Oswego Water and all other engineering firms
Reviews applications for accuracy and compliance with specifications
Performs the review, investigation and processing of all damage claims
Compiles and enters all documentation for submittal through RMIS (Risk Management Information System) and makes recommendations to RME (Resident Maintenance Engineer) for approval and/or denial
Enters all permits received into the Encroachment Permit Processing System (EPPS) for tracking and forward to appropriate personnel for processing and approval
Returns all pertinent correspondence to the applicants; maintain pending and complete records for the office files
Performs complex technical duties in all aspects of construction work relating to encroachment permits, to include field inspection and working with permittees, engineering firms and property developers to finalize projects
Works during hazardous weather conditions as assigned by the shift supervisor

Required

A high school diploma and two (2) years of progressively responsible engineering technician related experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence
Attainment of a Technician Certification in accordance with the SCDOT Technician Certification Policy may substitute for six (6) months of directly related experience
The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve sitting or standing at a desk for extended periods of time
This position may require occasional travel
This position may require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling
This position requires driving and walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and natural environmental hazards
Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs
May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies
This position may be exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions and noise
