Staff, Benefits Specialist

Responsibilities

Oversee the design, administration, and continuous improvement of health, dental, vision, life, disability, and flexible spending account and plans
Partner with vendors, brokers, and third-party administrators to ensure programs are competitive, cost-effective, and compliant with all applicable regulations (ACA, ERISA, HIPAA, COBRA)
Lead open enrollment processes, including setup, execution, and employee communications
Maintain HR systems for accurate eligibility, payroll deductions, and benefits data integrity
Respond to employee inquiries and provide clear, effective communication and education on benefits offerings
Manage 401(k) plan operations, including contribution and loan reconciliations, and maintain SERP (Supplemental Executive Retirement Plan) accounts
Oversee pension plan administration and support the development of retirement-related policies and programs
Lead and participate in special projects related to benefits strategy, plan design, and process improvements
Analyze benefits data and trends to assess business risks and recommend strategic solutions
Ensure all benefit plans comply with federal and state regulations, supporting audits, nondiscrimination testing, and required filings (e.g., Form 5500)
Prepare HRIS reports for governmental and audit requests, and conduct self-audits to streamline and automate processes
Collaborate with vendors and auditors to maintain plan integrity and compliance
Develop and deliver benefits education materials, training sessions, and policy manuals to increase employee understanding and engagement
Provide timely, professional responses to employee inquiries via multiple channels
Promote the development of benefits talent by coaching, mentoring, and supporting HR staff
Monitor competitive trends, regulatory changes, and emerging best practices in employee benefits
Participate in benefits surveys, meetings, and training to maintain expertise and ensure alignment with industry standards
Collaborate with leadership and cross-functional teams on the design and implementation of benefits strategy initiatives

Required

Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field required
Minimum of 10 years' experience in employee benefits administration or other associated business roles
Strong understanding of employee benefit programs and applicable laws and regulations
Demonstrated ability to analyze data, identify trends, and recommend strategic improvements
Proficiency in HRIS systems, benefits platforms, and Microsoft Office Suite
