Coffey Communications is seeking a Copy Editor who will serve as a proofreader for websites and publications. The role involves ensuring copy is free from errors, providing editing suggestions, and collaborating with team members throughout the production process.

Responsibilities

Ensures that copy reflects correct spelling, grammar and formatting and is consistent with approved style. Copyedits documents and adjusts copy for flow and readability, rewriting when necessary
Writes headlines, teasers, blurbs and calls to action. Assists in generating copy as needed
Writes short posts and teasers to promote content on social media
Develops familiarity with Coffey’s editorial resources and publication styles; checks client publications for fidelity to established styles and templates. Evaluates client preferences against Coffey’s publication style and records them for future use; ensures that such specifications are followed throughout production
Copyedits documents and makes necessary changes. Proofreads designed pages. Verifies the accuracy of content; calls all phone numbers and checks web addresses; checks client copy for outdated events or incorrect dates; ensures that people in photos ae identified correctly in captions
Proofreads website copy, ensures text is accessible, writes meta descriptions and makes changes using Coffey’s content management system (CMS)
Makes copy corrections after internal proofreading and client reviews. Works with graphic designers to ensure design corrections are made. Reviews corrected files to ensure all changes were made correctly. Performs quality checks at numerous stages of production
Works in tandem with other members of Publication Services and Digital Services, providing exceptional service at all times. Participates in kickoff meetings and page reviews, lending expertise regarding pagination and client preferences. Collaborates with graphic designers to meet clients’ layout desires and photo preferences. Ensures requested changes are made
Meets all deadlines for assigned projects. Is able to time-plan and manage time efficiently and to handle more than one project at a time. Is able to quickly shift between tasks, prioritizing as needed
Duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted or changed at any time at the discretion of management, formally or informally, either orally or in writing

Required

Bachelor's degree in journalism, English, marketing or communications or related fields
Strong verbal, written and interpersonal skills
Strong customer service orientation
A thorough understanding of AP style and rules of grammar and punctuation
Ability to understand and implement in-house style in conjunction with AP and client style guidelines
Organizational and time management skills
Ability to organize and prioritize work to meet multiple deadlines
Evidence of initiative, curiosity and self-motivation
Strong interest in working as a member of a team
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

Preferred

Familiarity with Adobe InDesign
