Distribution Planning Engineer - DER Impact Studies

Enercon Services, Inc. is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Distribution Planning Engineer to lead and support DER impact studies within their electric utility distribution planning team. This role is critical for the integration of distributed energy resources into the distribution grid, involving responsibilities such as conducting impact studies, performing simulations, and mentoring junior engineers.

Responsibilities

Conduct detailed DER impact studies to assess hosting capacity, voltage regulation, thermal loading, protection coordination, and power quality
Collaborate with interconnection teams to evaluate DER applications and provide technical recommendations
Support grid modernization initiatives including non-wires alternatives, advanced inverter functionality, and DERMS integration
Perform steady-state and dynamic simulations using industry-standard tools (e.g., WindMil, CYME, Synergi)
Develop and maintain distribution system models and perform scenario analyses to support planning decisions
Prepare technical reports, presentations, and documentation for internal stakeholders and regulatory filings
Mentor junior engineers and contribute to continuous improvement of planning processes and methodologies

Required

Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
Typically requires 6 years of experience in electric utility distribution planning, with a focus on DER integration
Strong understanding of distribution system operations, protection, and planning principles
Proficiency in power system analysis software (e.g., WindMil, CYME, Synergi)
Familiarity with regulatory frameworks and interconnection standards (e.g., IEEE 1547, FERC, NERC)
Excellent analytical, communication, and project management skills

Preferred

Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred
Experience with hosting capacity analysis and locational value assessments preferred
Knowledge of DERMS, AMI, and ADMS systems preferred
Experience working with utilities, developers, and regulatory agencies preferred
