HIGHWAY MAINTAINER I/II - Traffic
The State of New Hampshire's Department of Transportation, Bureau of Traffic, is seeking a full-time Highway Maintainer I or II. The role involves performing year-round highway maintenance activities including operation of vehicles and maintenance of traffic control devices to ensure safety on the NH State Highway System.

Responsibilities
Operates trucks and services and performs field adjustments to vehicles, power tools, and mechanized equipment used in the maintenance and construction of facilities and of the State Highway System
Maintains hand and power tools to ensure readiness and proper operation; repairs and troubleshoots issues as necessary
Monitors the application of highway materials to ensure highway safety and efficiency of use
Performs traffic control operations by directing the travelling public including flagging and erecting traffic control signs
Places traffic control devices on roadways/construction sites and performs traffic control activities to ensure work zone safety
Performs routine highway maintenance activities under adverse conditions with exposure to high-speed traffic, hazardous materials, inclement weather, extreme temperatures, and disaster situations to ensure the safety of the traveling public
Traverses varying terrain and performs tasks that involve heavy physical labor such as drainage construction, building and equipment maintenance/ repair; this includes the ability to lift/carry material weighing up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis
Must respond immediately in performing winter maintenance and/or other traffic emergency activities as needed on a 24-hour per day basis, throughout the entire year
Operates 2 axle commercial trucks and related highway equipment to provide all season safe conditions on assigned highways
Is responsible for the maintenance and limited repair of highway equipment in accordance with Department policies and industry standards
Performs routine highway and roads maintenance activities related to pavement marking and highway signage under adverse conditions with exposure to high-speed traffic, hazardous materials, inclement weather, extreme temperatures, and during disaster situations, to ensure the safety of the traveling public
Traverses varying terrain and performs tasks that involve heavy physical labor such as maintenance and installation of signage, equipment maintenance/ repair; this includes the ability to lift/carry material weighing up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis
Erects proper traffic control signs and devises to protect a work zone and to adequately warn the traveling public of any road or safety concerns; directs traffic as necessary
Supervises small work crews that perform the same routine highway pavement marking and signage maintenance functions; provides on-the-job training to entry-level members of crew in areas of maintenance, work methods, safety and environmental practices while performing similar work
Reports any observed, safety, and/or environmental hazards and violations to supervisory personnel
Must respond immediately in performing traffic emergency activities as needed on a 24-hour per day basis, throughout the entire year
Qualification
Required
8th grade education
Valid driver's license
Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet the minimum standards as established by the Department of Transportation
Offers of employment are conditional upon the individual obtaining a Commercial Driver's License medical card unless the candidate is currently employed by the State of New Hampshire (if CDL is required after hire)
Must receive a negative result on a pre-employment urinalysis drug screen in accordance with the Code of Federal Regulations and US DOT requirements
Must be able to lift/carry material weighing up to 50 lbs. on an intermittent basis
Must have a telephone or acceptable means of communication and be available 24 hours per day
High school diploma or equivalent credential
Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL-B) with appropriate endorsements
Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet the minimum standards as established by the Division of Transportation
Offers of employment are conditional upon the individual obtaining a Commercial Driver's License medical card unless the candidate is currently employed by the State of New Hampshire (if CDL is required after hire)

Preferred
Experience in a field related to highway maintenance
