Caribbean Community Correspondent

Documented is dedicated to publishing journalism for and about New York City’s immigrant communities. The Caribbean Community Correspondent will strengthen connections with Caribbean immigrants through event participation, online engagement, and content creation, while also reporting on community issues and analyzing engagement metrics.

Responsibilities

Build and maintain relationships with Caribbean immigrants, mutual aid groups, advocacy orgs, faith leaders, and social service providers across NYC
Represent Documented at local events, including neighborhood forums, community board meetings, and cultural gatherings
Listen to the community’s information needs and help translate those needs into responsive content
Collaborate with local partners to organize information sessions, pop-ups, and workshops that offer practical support (e.g. housing help, legal rights, health access)
Coordinate logistics for Documented’s participation in partner-led events
Summarize community feedback and emerging concerns to craft content pitches
Collaborate with Documented’s research team to facilitate audience research through surveys and interviews
Report on issues affecting and of interest to the Caribbean community

Required

Professional fluency in both written and spoken English
Must live in NYC
Must be able to work in the United States
Passion for community engagement and a genuine interest in fostering connections within the Caribbean communities in New York City
Experience reporting in a newsroom
Deep community contacts with Caribbean community leaders in NYC
Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to engage and connect with individuals from diverse backgrounds
Excellent time management, highly organized and detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines effectively
Familiarity with NYC social safety net programs, public resources, and legal aid landscape — or willingness and skills to learn quickly
Comfort using WhatsApp, Facebook, video and text-based tools to reach community members
Confidence in being able to distill federal and state policies into actionable service journalism — or willingness and skills to learn quickly

Preferred

At least 3 years experience working within a newsroom
Experience in event planning and coordination with a focus on community-oriented events
Experience in grassroots organizing, mutual aid, casework, or community outreach
Analytical mindset with the ability to interpret data and derive actionable insights
