Human Resources Director

The American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) is seeking a strategic and collaborative HR Director to lead all human resources functions. This role involves aligning HR strategy with organizational goals and driving effective people practices to build a high performing workforce.

Responsibilities

Develop and lead forward-looking HR strategies that align with the organization’s mission, values, and long-term goals
Sets enterprise HR strategy and ensures effective execution through HR leadership
Provides a strategic partnership to staff leaders to ensure HR is forward looking and supporting department needs
Provides vision, coaching, and support to the HR Manager overseeing key areas including benefits and compliance, payroll, talent acquisition, performance management, and learning and development
Foster their professional growth and encourage a collaborative, empowered HR team
Leads workforce planning, succession development, and compensation strategy to ensure the organization is structured and resourced to meet current and long-term needs
Oversee the effective use and continuous improvement of HR technology platforms, including HRIS, payroll automation, and applicant tracking systems
Serve as a strategic advisor to executive leadership on all people-related matters, offering insights and guidance to support decision-making and organizational development
Partner with the CFO and Legal to ensure full compliance with employment laws/regulations and proactively manages organizational risk
Leads and coordinates the annual HR processes, including performance management, compensation planning, benefits renewal, policy updates, and compliance reviews
Promote a culture of accountability, equity, and continuous improvement
Champion employee engagement initiatives that support inclusion, recognition, well-being, and organizational alignment
Facilitate communication and alignment across departments to ensure HR policies and practices are well-integrated into daily operations and strategic planning
Responsible for overall management of an HR Manager and HR Generalist:
Foster an open and encouraging work environment while operating within ASSP’s CLEAR values
Responsible for setting annual goals, maintaining frequent and relevant communications, and fostering the growth and development of direct reports

Required

Demonstrated expertise in strategic planning, organizational development, and HR systems implementation
Strong leadership, influence, and communication skills
In-depth understanding of HR best practices across all functional areas: talent management, benefits, compliance, compensation, payroll, and employee relations
Strong knowledge of federal and state employment laws and regulations (e.g., FLSA, FMLA, ACA, ERISA, Title VII)
Demonstrated ability to develop and execute strategic HR plans that align with organizational goals, drive business results, and support long-term workforce planning
Proven leadership in developing, coaching, and empowering HR teams; skilled in fostering accountability, empathy, and collaboration
Proficient in using data and analytics to guide decision-making, evaluate program effectiveness, and inform continuous improvement
Strong communication and influencing skills, with the ability to engage effectively with executive leadership, cross-functional teams, and external stakeholders
Committed to cultivating a positive, inclusive, and high-performance culture that values employee engagement, innovation, and equity
Proficient in Microsoft 365 Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and One Drive
Familiarity with HRIS systems, payroll platforms, and talent management technologies
Knowledge of organizational development, change management, and coaching frameworks
Able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
Ability to adapt and thrive in an environment of change

Full-time position with the ability to work M-F during normal business hours. May be expected to occasionally work outside of normal business hours
Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field required, Master's degree preferred
At least 8–10 years of progressive HR leadership experience
Strategic Vision & Implementation: Leads functional or multi-program strategies aligned to organizational priorities. Translates enterprise strategy into integrated plans and ensures consistent execution across teams and initiatives
Decision-Making: Makes high-impact decisions within a functional area, navigating complexity and ambiguity. Balances data, risk, and stakeholder input to enable effective execution and outcomes
Fiscal Accountability / Business Acumen: Oversees financial planning and budget management for a function or portfolio. Aligns resources with strategic priorities and evaluates trade-offs to ensure sustainability and value
Problem-Solving & Thinking Challenges: Leads resolution of complex, cross-functional challenges. Applies systems thinking to identify root causes and implement sustainable solutions with organizational impact
Interactions, Communications & Stakeholder Engagement: Acts as a primary representative for the function. Builds alignment with senior leaders and stakeholders through clear, strategic communication and relationship management
Adaptability & Change Management: Leads function-wide change initiatives. Anticipates resistance, supports teams through transition, and balances innovation with operational stability
Teamwork, Coaching & Leadership: Develops managers and leaders. Builds leadership capacity, succession readiness, and a culture of accountability and collaboration across teams
Research Acumen: Ensures data and research inform planning and decision-making. Translates insights into actionable recommendations that support strategic direction
