Develop new marketing and business development approaches beyond the current referral and contract expansion model
Capitalize on the uncertainty in the current nonprofit funding environment to develop partnerships and mutually beneficial business ventures
Ensure the organization is less vulnerable to federal or state funding shifts by pursuing new funding sources beyond traditional government contracts
Identify a strong CFO to modernize financial systems, strengthen controls, and ensure oversight of complex funding streams
Guide the organization through inevitable crises including public health emergencies, natural disasters, and funding disruptions
Work with the board to sharpen governance and ensure alignment around strategy, risk, and transparency
Serve as a solutions-focused partner with the Board and Senior Leadership team comfortable sharing hard truths and surfacing risks
Engage with strategic partners, policymakers, the media, and the communities being served with transparency, candor, compassion, and optimism
Preserve Heluna Health's culture of dedication and high morale while modernizing processes and setting clear performance expectations
Qualification
Required
Experience leading organizations with budgets of $100M+ and managing multi-year, multi-source funding portfolios as a CEO, CFO, COO, or Executive Director with a public health department, health system, philanthropic entity, or large nonprofit with significant grant-funded operations. Demonstrated success diversifying revenue streams beyond traditional sources is essential
Strong grounding in public and population health through direct oversight of programs or executive leadership in adjacent fields such as maternal/child health, nutrition, infectious disease, mental health epidemiology, disease management, or health policy. While clinical credentials are valued and an advanced degree preferred, public health context is essential
The CEO must understand the critical operational areas supported by Heluna Health while demonstrating the capacity to be forward-thinking, proven experience with emerging technologies, particularly AI and data infrastructure modernization, as these represent the foundation of operational excellence and future growth
Candidates will have worked closely with government partners at the local, state, and federal levels, and bring fluency with compliance requirements, and hands-on experience navigating public-sector relationships (including procurement, contracting, advocacy, or public-private collaborations)
Experience developing and executing marketing strategies and business development initiatives beyond traditional referral-based models. Demonstrated ability to create clear vision and value messaging that opens new revenue streams. History of building systematic approaches to business development while maintaining relationship-based partnerships
Understanding the dynamics and constraints of serving as a fiscal sponsor is essential. Experience with grant making, fiscal sponsorship, intermediary models, or supporting community-based organizations is required, along with the ability to manage complex administrative infrastructure that enables frontline impact across multiple programs and partnerships
Experience leading organizations through crises with decisiveness and high emotional intelligence. Building on Heluna Health's proven crisis response during COVID, the CEO must maintain operational excellence, team morale, and mission focus during complex challenges such as public health emergencies, natural disasters, or major funding disruptions
Experience as a trusted partner to a nonprofit or public-sector board, along with a history of building high-performing teams and leading tenured senior staff. Ability to create healthy organizational culture, manage change, and bring out the best in mission-driven professionals
Experience preserving and strengthening organizational culture while implementing change. History of leading mission-driven teams with high morale and engagement, and proven ability to maintain productive workplace culture during periods of growth or transition
Experience implementing or advancing equitable and inclusive environments that support diverse teams who are responsible for serving historically under-resourced communities. This must be embedded as a leadership, not a standalone initiative
Experience serving as an organizational spokesperson with strong written and oral communications skills demonstrated through conference, media, and other public appearances. Ability to engage diverse stakeholders including media, policymakers, and public agencies
