Protection and Control Technician

Coalesce Management Consulting is seeking a Protection & Controls (P&C) Technician responsible for the installation, testing, commissioning, maintenance, and troubleshooting of protective relaying and control systems in high-voltage substations. The role ensures system reliability, safety, and compliance with utility standards and NERC requirements.

Responsibilities

Install, wire, test, and commission protective relays, control panels, switchboards, RTUs, and SCADA systems
Perform relay testing using test equipment (e.g., Omicron, Doble, Megger, SEL AcSELerator, etc.)
Troubleshoot and diagnose protection and control system issues to minimize outages and equipment failures
Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, one-lines, and relay logic diagrams
Perform functional testing of breaker control circuits, trip schemes, alarm circuits, and interlocks
Calibrate meters, relays, transducers, and monitoring devices
Conduct end-to-end testing for transmission line protection and communication-assisted schemes
Maintain accurate test reports, documentation, and maintenance records
Support commissioning activities for new substations, expansions, and system upgrades
Ensure all work complies with safety regulations, company procedures, and NERC/FERC standards
Coordinate with engineers, system operators, construction crews, and inspectors during outages and testing windows

Required

Experience with protective relays (SEL, GE, ABB, Siemens, Schweitzer, etc.)
Strong understanding of power system protection principles
Experience with control wiring, panel wiring, and substation equipment
Proficient with relay test sets (Omicron, Doble, Megger, etc.)
Ability to interpret electrical drawings and protection schemes
Knowledge of substation equipment (breakers, transformers, CTs, PTs, batteries, etc.)
Familiarity with SCADA, RTU, and communication protocols (DNP3, IEC 61850, etc.)
Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills

Preferred

Journeyman electrician, substation wireman, or equivalent field experience
Associate degree in Electrical Technology or related field
NETA, NICET, or manufacturer certifications (SEL, Omicron, etc.)
Utility, transmission, or high-voltage substation experience
