The Failure Analysis Engineer plays a hands-on role in mud motor teardown, inspection, incident investigation, and technical reporting, partnering closely with operations, engineering, and field teams to improve motor reliability and run life.

Responsibilities

Perform hands-on PDM mud motor teardown, inspection, and failure investigations in the Midland shop

Conduct root cause analysis on PDM motors and related downhole tool failures

Write clear, detailed incident and failure analysis reports for drilling engineers and internal stakeholders

Troubleshoot reliability issues and recommend corrective and preventive actions (CAPA)

Analyze EDR (Electronic Drilling Recorder) data to evaluate drilling dynamics including torque, WOB, vibration/dysfunctions, and motor loading

Support motor optimization initiatives to improve run life, performance, and reliability

Assist with design changes and engineering improvements based on failure trends and field data

Interface with operations, engineering, and field personnel to resolve issues under aggressive deadlines

Apply engineering judgment and critical thinking to complex, multi-factor failure modes

Drive continuous improvement in quality, reliability, reporting standards, and investigation processes
